LONDON - Underground

 

To travel by Underground is a fast and convenient way of finding your way around London. Your ticket can be bought at Underground stations and some local newsagents. Or you can purchase a London Visitors Travelcard online before you travel.  You will need to show your ticket also when exiting a station, so remember to keep it throughout your journey. If you fail to show a valid ticket for your journey, you may become liable to pay a £10 penalty fare. If you are 14 or 15 you will need a Photocard for all tickets, and everyone will need one for the 7 Day Travelcard.

 
From Monday to Saturday, the trains run from about 05.15 until just before 01.00. On Sundays, trains run from about 06.30 until midnight. If it is very important that you get with a train in the morning or at night, it is best to ring the London Travel Information service or ask at a station to get detailed information. 
 
The following different tickets are available to suit your needs; One Day Travelcard, Weekend Travelcard, Family Travelcard, 7 Day Travelcard, One Day LT Card, Carnets, Group Day Ticket, Single and Return tickets.

Travelcards
If you plan to make more than a couple of journeys a day, it may be a good idea to buy a Travelcard, which will allow you to make as many journeys as you wish within the zones and times the card is valid for. Travelcards take you around the London Underground, buses in Greater London, Docklands Light Railway, Tramlink and most National Rail services within Greater London.

The One Day Travelcard is valid from 09.30 Monday to Friday and at the weekend and on Public Holidays it is valid all day.  On the following day, it is valid for any journey which starts before 04.30

The One Day LT Card allows you to travel on the London Underground, most buses in Greater London, Docklands Light Railway and Tramlink. it is valid from 00.01 on the day of validity (unlike the one day travelcard).  On the following day, it is valid for any journey which starts before 04.30.  The ticket is not valid on most National Rail Services or on the Underground north of Queen's Park on the Bakerloo line.

Weekend Travelcards allow you to travel all day Saturday and Sunday or two consecutive days during a Public Holiday. On the day following the expiry date it is valid for any journey which starts before 04.30.

The Family Travelcard works like a One Day Travelcard, the only difference is that it enables all the family to travel around London on a better deal! To be able to get one, you need to be in a group of one or two adults, travelling with at least one, but up to four children. Every member of the group gets a card but you have to travel together at all times.

A 7 Day Travelcard is valid for seven consecutive days regardless of which day you buy the card. To get a 7 Day Travelcard you also need a Photocard, so don't forget to bring a photograph of yourself when you buy it. Photo boots are available at some Tube stations and in post offices.
    
Travelcards are also available for areas excluding Zone 1 and for longer periods.

If you are between 16 and 17 years of age you can get a 'Youth' LT Card. It allows you to make as many journeys as you wish, within the zones selected, on the Underground, buses, Night Buses, Docklands Light Railway and Tramlink services. It is not valid for most National Rail services or on the underground's Bakerloo line north of Queen's Park. To get your 'Youth' LT Card, you need a Photocard to go with it.
    
'Youth' LT Cards are also available for areas excluding zone 1 and for longer periods.

Carnet tickets are not personal, so you may want to buy a book of 10 and share it with your family and friends. Compared to buying 10 single tickets for Zone 1, the carnet saves you £4. They cannot be used as a ticket extension, but are only valid for one single journey, starting and finishing in Zone 1. Carnet tickets are only available for Zone 1.

Group day tickets are available for groups of ten or more adults or children travelling together. They allow you to make as many journeys as you wish in Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
