David McVicar's new production ofPuccini's Tosca, unveiled in 2002,
returns to the London Coliseum. The plot is a thriller set amidst the
revolutionary ferment of Rome in 1800 and was initially dubbed a 'shabby
little shocker' because of its explosive content and sordid twists. Tosca is
the beautiful girlfriend of artist Cavaradossi who gets caught up in the
intrigue. This is a dramatic and accessible production with a well-loved
score and excellent singers, and is highly recommended for opera novices and
longstanding fans alike.
